At Yorkshire Rose College, therapies aren’t an add-on — they’re at the heart of what we do. Our on-site Therapy Team provides a range of integrated therapies, working closely with tutors, support staff and families to make sure every student can access learning, build confidence and develop independence.
We provide support through a mix of one-to-one sessions, small group work and integrated activities within the curriculum. Therapists also help shape our wider environment, from quiet spaces to sensory programmes, so students can regulate, focus and thrive.
Through our programme of integrated therapies, our aim is simple: to remove barriers, build resilience and empower every learner to achieve their goals in education, work and life.
A joined-up approach
What makes our therapies unique is how closely they’re woven into the fabric of college life. Therapists attend team meetings, support target-setting, and help shape the curriculum. Students don’t just “access therapy” — they experience a whole-college culture of integrated support.
Every student has the right to communicate in the way that works best for them. Our SALT team:
- Assess communication needs and create Communication Passports so all staff know how to support each learner.
- Provide one-to-one or group sessions, including smILE therapy to build functional social communication (e.g. ordering food, asking for help).
- Support staff to embed strategies and set achievable targets.
- Create visual resources, such as easy-read documents, so students can access complex information.
- Work closely with our Audiologist and Teacher of the Deaf to ensure students who use hearing aids or cochlear implants get the most from their equipment.
Our goal is to help students communicate confidently — in college, in the community and beyond.
Our experienced teachers and support teams deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, helping every child to achieve academically, socially and emotionally — preparing them to take confident steps into the future.
Occupational Therapy helps students build independence in everyday life. After an initial assessment, therapy is tailored to individual goals and regularly reviewed. Support can include:
- Independent living skills: cooking, shopping, managing money, daily routines.
- Fine and gross motor skills: writing, typing, balance, coordination.
- Sensory processing: for students who may over- or under-react to sensory input, OTs create personalised sensory diets to aid regulation.
- Specialist equipment: recommended where needed, to help students access chosen activities.
OTs also work with families and outside services, ensuring progress continues at home and in the wider community.
